"So tell me, just how long have you had this feeling that no one is watching you?" (Christopher Locke: Entropy Gradient Reversals)

The "Bushism" Of The Day

I'm going to spend a lot of time on Social Security. I enjoy it. I enjoy taking on the issue. I guess, it's the Mother in me.

Living in Utah….

Things are really different here.  That’s generally self-evident.  However even I’m taken by surprise sometimes….

There was supposed to be the normal Sunday night football game on NBC tonight.  But jeez, guess what?  The station in SLC decided to PREEMPT the game - in order to broadcast a HIGHLY religious musical performance (as well as assorted LDS religious “talks”) instead.

Separation of church and state?  Not in Utah.  Not only “no”, but “HELL no”….  Be nice if we had an alternative to church-run television…. (well, we would have, had husband not decided to drop the national channels - a whole extra $5 a month - in favor of the “church run local” tv stations…. which aren’t any more local than the rest of them were…. *sigh*)

The obtuseness of TV ad writers….

Okay, so there’s this new HDTV ad from Phillips (I think it is….)  - there’s a cute-ish little girl standing on a rock in the clear probably Caribbean Ocean, and a baby elephant (hair and all) on another rock.  The girl is holding a box.  She opens the box and discusses the new whatever it is from whoever, and the closing line is, “It’s the mirrors”.  (And she’s slightly “lispy” so the word “mirrors” is slurred, but that’s a whole other gripe and post….)

All right.  Now, I don’t give a rat’s ass about HDTV (or any tv at all, really….) - but since my husband lives for sports on tv I get all this extraneous crud when I don’t have my headphones in place…. and with this ad, I wonder….

If you were Phillips or whoever it is, and if your latest and greatest HDTV used mirrors to accomplish its “miracles”, and if you were paying an ad writer these big bucks to advertise….

THEN WHY IN THE HELL WOULDN’T YOU DO SOMETHING LOGICAL WITH THIS?  What’s with this silly little girl who can’t pronounce “mirrors”, and the ocean, the rocks, and the elephant (hair and all)?

So…. listen up dummies.  Here is the ad you SHOULD have been running:

Little girl, long blonde hair, blue dress, white knee high socks, black maryjane pumps.  Holding your little box…. as she watches a white rabbit run off as it looks at the time on a pocketwatch….  she opens the box, and in the box she and the audience see the white rabbit admiring himself in a mirror - cut to the chase, she says (WITH proper pronunciation!) “It’s the mirrors!” while the box reflects the scene up and out….

Alice Through The LookingGlass of course.  And of course, I bet Phillips would have had to pay the earth in royalties - but then, people would GET IT…. instead of saying, “HUH?”

"Money and the Blind" from Judith E. Vido’s P O V

She’s an author, a singer, an activist.  And she’s blind.  Read her take on Dr. Marc Maurer (President of the Nation Federation of the Blind) and his statement in re the latest ruling by a Federal judge:  Money and the Blind

I guarantee you you’ll be cheering this feisty lady on!

Cranberry Chutney redux….

I made a batch yesterday (see previous post on this: http://vkaryl.net/pov/2006/10/28/the-power-of-the-net-not-to-mention-google/).  It’s perfect.  It went together the way I remembered from ten years back, and it tastes RIGHT on biscuits, rolls, toast….

I’m a happy camper.  Anyone wants the recipe, I’ll be happy to post it - then if I lose it again, maybe it won’t take me ten years to find it….

It’s funny the things you remember

when presented with a catalog of Christmas games/toys/gifts. We all like to look and drool and dream….

Today I got in the mail a catalog from The Vermont Country Store. They can be counted upon to still provide things you thought were gone the way of the dodo. In this catalog (a Christmas-y sort of effort) they have the following: reissues of the original Monopoly game (with the mid-30’s graphics, the metal tokens, wooden hotels and houses….), the original Lincoln Logs (all wood), original TinkerToys (all wood).

Amazing. I think I’ll order them all. Oh - and they have reprints mimicking the original Nancy Drew and Black Stallion books - the ones my dippy mother decided were useless and threw away (along with the whole set of original Fiesta Ware…. *sigh*)

The Lord of the Rings, the Celtic music ethic, and “providence”

I’ve been reading LotR since 1965, about once a year - the four “main” books, and sometimes everything else published/available at the time…. that’s 40+ years of Tolkien’s masterwork, and every time I read the books, I find something new (or at least something I didn’t remember from the first - or last - time I read them).

Then the movies came along. A lot of people, some of my family included, got a bit miffed (or more than that….) at the “liberties” taken with the books to make movies out of them. Now, I don’t do theaters. I never see movies until they come out on dvd. So by the time the movies were viewable here in my home, I’d heard it all. And it’s all okay - because the movies “fit” me the way the books always have…. sure, there are things that are different from the books - but it’s a different medium, with different needs and intentions. So I don’t have a problem with those parts where the books seem to have been “rewritten/reframed”…. it’s all okay, the movies are - magnificent…. only word for them.

And that brings me to the music “link”. I’ve loved Enya, Clannad, Sinead O’Connor, et al ever since I began hearing them. It made perfect sense to me that some of the music for LotR would be of that genre/feel. And now, I’m hearing the pieces from the movies on my pandora stations. Which strikes me as being the most wonderful sort of providence….
